The Confusion of the Williams

In trying to identify the William of Jackson Co., TN, we've accumulated data to identify other Wm's of the same time period, and therefore eliminate them from consideration.

PIONEER BAPTIST CHURCH RECORDS by Cawthorn says,"William Tinsley, born 1735, ' was the first white man to cross the Big Hill at Butlers Landing and record the 1000 acre land grant from the government." William and his wife Elizabeth came from VA and settled in what is now Metcalfe Co.,KY. Their son John Tinsley, was born in KY in 1796... John married Alice Mulkey daughter of Phillip Mulkey the pastor of Brimstone Church.

Wm appears on Barren Co. KY tax list in 1800.

1804 William Tinsley of Jackson Co., TN sells 50a on Blue Spring Creek, Barren Co., to Lewis Gooding. deed book AA p 120 (William that appears subsequently in Barren Co. records is Wm of the SC Tinsley family.)
