I was 17 at the time and hadn’t seen him since I was about 4 years old. I can remember him carrying me on his shoulders with my legs around his neck and me holding on to his head. That was my favorite means of transportation when I was young and couldn’t keep up with the grown ups.
We lived out Mammoth Cave Road on what was called Toohey Ridge. When he came to work there (with the CCC) , he visited mother a couple of times. He knew my brother and I had to make the living for mother and our selves. Harvey worked on a farm for $10.00 a month. We lived in a two room house with wood for heat. I washed and did anything to make a few dollars. Martin asked me if I would do his washing. He would bring it every two weeks and pay me $2.50 each time. That would be $5.00 a month! After the other officers saw his clothes, they asked him about me doing their clothes, so, he brought clothes from two more men, but he had me charge them $3.50 each time. So, I was making more each month than most men on the farm. But, it kept me busy as that was with a wash board and I had to use flat irons heated on the stove. I would wash one week and iron the next. With my other work it kept me busy, but it also made me one of the best dresses girls in our church!
